Hi everyone, It's Tuesday with Sizzle and today I am going to show you an example of repurposing. I had this shelf in my house that wasn't really being used. I love shelves so I bought it awhile back but it never seemed to mess with everything else. I looked at it one day and thought - mmm that would make a great ribbon organizer. I don't really have a lot of ribbon but they are so cute that I thought my craft room would enjoy having colorful ribbon assesorizing the walls. 
Here is the before shelf. It is sparse. I kept moving things off it because the shelves weren't the right size so most of the stuff I own and I am not one to just buy stuff to fill a shelf....
Here is the after:
(See how little ribbon I have? MMM. That would be a cheap Christmas present. hint. Especially if you hit a scrapbooking warehouse sale)
Here is what I did:
Buy a dowel - I got 3/8 inch that worked great with the ribbon hole (is there a name for that?)
Drill a hole using a 3/8 drill bit (while drilling I found out that this thing is NOT real wood but it is so heavy but it didn't make a difference)
Paint shelf (I did not sand, I tried but since it isn't real wood it just got black dust everywhere so I tested it without sanding and it adhered---Yeah! so I just painted the rest)
Let dry
Sand the edges
Add antiquing glaze, rub around unti you like it, rub off extra until you like it. It doesn't dry for 15 min so you have a lot of time to mess around with it. You just use a slightly damp cotton rag - I used a dishtowel but it washed right out. I got this at Lowes - it is RIGHT by my house so I only go there but Home Depot has a great glaze - Ralph Lauren Smoke Glaze.
Here is what my edges looked like since you can't really tell in the big picture:
There you go something old becomes something new. Think of other ways you could use something before you throw it out. I love going to thrift stores and finding this I could repurpose.
There is one more part of this project I haven't completed yet. I am thinking I will leave that until Thursday. See you then!
